Comparison
PaceBrain vs TrainingPeaks
TrainingPeaks is built around a coach who writes your plan. If you don't have one, that part falls to you. PaceBrain writes the plan itself, adapts it every week, and works with whatever watch you already own.
Where TrainingPeaks is the better choice
If you have a coach, or you want one, TrainingPeaks is the tool built for that relationship and it is very good at it. Its charting depth is genuinely unmatched, and a large part of the endurance coaching world runs on it. We are not going to pretend otherwise. PaceBrain is aimed at the runner who has no coach and wants the training decisions made, and explained, for them.
Side by side
TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic are products of TrainingPeaks LLC, acquired by Garmin Ltd. in July 2026. PaceBrain is independent and not affiliated with, endorsed by, or sponsored by Garmin or TrainingPeaks. Feature descriptions reflect our understanding at the time of writing — check their site for current details.
Works with the watch you already own
PaceBrain is independent and device-agnostic by design. Connect Garmin in one click, or upload GPX, FIT or TCX files exported from any watch — Polar, Suunto, COROS, Apple Watch, Wahoo. You can also add runs by hand. A wearable adds recovery and HRV signal, but the race prediction and the training plan work without one.
To be clear about the news: Garmin announced its acquisition of TrainingPeaks on 22 July 2026 and did not announce any change to device compatibility. We have no inside knowledge and are not predicting one. Our point is simpler — PaceBrain does not depend on which watch you chose.
Common questions
What is the best TrainingPeaks alternative for a self-coached runner?
It depends on whether you have a coach. TrainingPeaks is designed around a coach writing your plan and an athlete executing it, and it is excellent at that. If you do not have a coach, the part that writes the plan is missing, and you end up doing that work yourself. PaceBrain is built for that case: it generates the plan, adapts it week to week from your training and recovery data, and explains its reasoning.
Did Garmin buy TrainingPeaks?
Yes. Garmin announced on 22 July 2026 that it had acquired TrainingPeaks and TrainHeroic. Garmin stated that TrainingPeaks president Lee Gerakos will continue to lead the company. No change to device compatibility was announced.
Does PaceBrain work if I do not have a Garmin watch?
Yes. PaceBrain is device-agnostic. You can connect Garmin in one click, upload GPX, FIT or TCX files exported from any watch, or add runs manually. A wearable adds recovery and HRV signals, but the race prediction and the training plan work without one.
Is PaceBrain cheaper than TrainingPeaks?
PaceBrain Premium is A$7.99 per month and there is a free tier that includes the race time predictor, Garmin sync and basic stats. Compare current TrainingPeaks pricing directly on their site, since plans and currencies change.
Can I still use TrainingPeaks alongside PaceBrain?
Yes. They solve different problems and plenty of runners use a log and a planner side by side. PaceBrain does not require you to stop using anything else.
