Compression Garments for Runners: The Evidence

Compression garments do little to make you run faster, but the recovery evidence is more promising and mixed.

If you want a short answer: wearing compression garments while you run is unlikely to make you faster, but wearing them afterwards may help you recover. The most recent and largest review, Wang et al. (2025), pooled 51 randomised controlled trials and found no significant improvement in race time or time to exhaustion, with only low to very low certainty of evidence. Earlier reviews reached similar conclusions about performance. Recovery is a different story: Hill et al. (2014) found a moderate, significant benefit for muscle soreness, strength and power in the days after hard exercise. The picture is not uniform, and some strong field trials in marathon runners found no benefit at all, so it pays to read the detail rather than the marketing.

Do compression garments make you run faster?

The performance evidence is consistently underwhelming. Wang et al. (2025) carried out the most up-to-date synthesis, pooling 51 randomised controlled trials with 899 participants (33 studies in the primary meta-analysis). Runners wearing compression garments showed no significant improvement in race time or time to exhaustion compared with controls, and the certainty of evidence was rated low to very low. The authors found no evidence supporting compression garments as a strategy to improve running or endurance performance.

This echoes an earlier review by Engel et al. (2016), which reported no statistically significant mean effect on actual running performance times across a wide range of distances, from 400 metres to the marathon. So if your reason for buying compression socks or tights is a faster finish time, the current evidence does not back that expectation. The one measurable mechanical effect Wang et al. (2025) did find was reduced soft-tissue vibration, which has not translated into faster times.

Why do so many runners feel they help then?

Perceived benefit and measured benefit are not the same thing, and this gap runs through the literature. Engel et al. (2016) noted that while running times did not improve, runners may see small gains in endurance-related variables such as time to exhaustion and running economy, alongside modestly reduced muscle pain during recovery. These are subtle effects, easily swamped by day-to-day variation.

The comfort and sensation of support may also shape how a garment feels without changing physiology. Kabongo et al. (2022) found that upper-leg compression significantly lowered subjective muscle pain in the first 48 hours after a marathon, but the authors explicitly cautioned that this benefit may be psychological, because their study lacked a placebo control. That caveat matters. When a runner can see and feel what they are wearing, expectation alone can influence reported soreness, which is why placebo-controlled designs are so valuable and so often missing.

What does compression do for recovery after running?

Recovery is where the evidence turns more favourable. Hill et al. (2014) conducted a meta-analysis of 12 studies on compression garments and recovery from exercise-induced muscle damage. They found a moderate, statistically significant benefit across every outcome measured, all at p<0.001: reduced severity of delayed-onset muscle soreness (Hedges' g=0.403), improved recovery of muscle strength (g=0.462) and muscle power (g=0.487), and faster clearance of creatine kinase (g=0.439), a blood marker of muscle damage.

The authors concluded that compression garments are effective in enhancing recovery from muscle damage. This is a meaningfully different message from the performance findings. The practical read is that the case for wearing compression after a hard session or race is stronger than the case for wearing it during. Even so, a moderate effect size is not dramatic, and individual response varies, so treat it as a marginal aid rather than a cure.

Can wearing compression between sessions improve next-day running?

A few studies have tested compression worn during the recovery window itself, and the results are more encouraging than the race-day data. Hamlin et al. (2012) ran a randomised crossover trial in rugby union players, having them wear lower-body compression garments through a 24-hour recovery period. Compared with placebo, 3-km run time improved by 2.0% and average repeated-sprint times by around 1.2%, with substantially lower delayed-onset muscle soreness at 48 hours.

The authors concluded that recovery compression is likely worthwhile and very unlikely to be harmful, which is a fair summary of the balance of risk and reward. The caveat is population: these were rugby players performing sprint and short-run tests, not distance runners recovering for a long run. Whether the same 24-hour recovery effect carries across to marathon training loads is not established by this study, so extrapolate cautiously.

Do compression stockings help during a marathon?

Two field trials specifically tested compression during real marathon running, and both are sobering. Areces et al. (2015) pair-matched and randomised 34 experienced marathoners to knee-high graduated compression stockings or conventional socks. The stockings did not improve running pace and did not prevent exercise-induced muscle damage, with no differences in serum myoglobin, creatine kinase, jump height or leg power. The authors called compression stockings an ineffective strategy for long-distance events.

Kabongo et al. (2022) tested upper-leg garments in 18 recreational marathon runners and likewise found no significant difference in race performance or thigh swelling, though subjective pain was lower in the first 48 hours. Taken together, these controlled field studies suggest that wearing compression during a marathon is unlikely to protect your muscles or improve your time, whatever it does for how your legs feel afterwards.

Is compression worth the money for high-intensity work?

For hard, intense running, the value proposition is questionable. da Silva et al. (2018) pooled 23 randomised studies on lower-limb compression during high-intensity exercise. The garments were not associated with improved performance and showed no meaningful effect on vertical jump, VO2max, submaximal oxygen uptake, blood lactate or rating of perceived exertion. The authors openly questioned whether the garments are a worthwhile investment for performance.

That is a direct challenge to a common selling point. When you combine da Silva et al. (2018) with Wang et al. (2025) and Engel et al. (2016), the performance verdict is remarkably consistent across independent reviews and dozens of trials: no reliable speed or physiological advantage. If your budget is limited, the evidence suggests spending it on training, sleep and nutrition rather than compression wear bought in the hope of running faster.

How should a runner actually use compression garments?

A sensible, evidence-aligned approach separates the two use cases. For performance during running, the balance of trials, including Wang et al. (2025), Engel et al. (2016), da Silva et al. (2018) and the marathon field study by Areces et al. (2015), gives little reason to expect a benefit. Do not rely on compression to hit a time goal.

For recovery after hard efforts, the case is more defensible. Hill et al. (2014) found moderate benefits for soreness, strength and power, and Hamlin et al. (2012) found worthwhile next-day gains from wearing compression through a 24-hour recovery window, describing it as very unlikely to be harmful. Comfort and reduced perceived soreness, as in Kabongo et al. (2022), have some value even if partly psychological. In short: modest expectations, low downside. If a garment feels good and aids your recovery routine, it is a reasonable low-risk tool, not a performance shortcut.

The practical bottom line

Do not buy compression garments expecting to run faster; five independent reviews and field trials found no reliable performance benefit. Do consider them for recovery, where Hill et al. (2014) found moderate gains in soreness, strength and power. Wear them after hard sessions rather than during races, keep your expectations modest, and remember the downside is negligible but the upside is marginal.
